There has been much hand wringing about how other grocery stores will go bankrupt when these 30% off stores open. Why? The government store will be empty after the first day and everyone else will continue with their business as usual.
Will these Mamdani Markets fail? No doubt. But it won’t happen with the first store. Or the second, third or fourth. It will begin after they’ve driven out the privately owned stores, but by then it will be too late. You must wonder why Mamdani is rolling out his government run stores so slowly. His current goal is five stores and the first one is not projected to open until a year or two from now. For a city with a population of 20 million or so, I seriously doubt that five stores will make much of an impact. But don’t worry, the pace will quicken and the scope expand. This process will proceed much like it does in the tale of How To Catch A Pig.
