Public “servants” are permitted to know everything about “private” citizens, yet private citizens are prohibited from knowing anything about their public “servants”.
Establish government and then use it to get what you want is the modern variation on kingship and royalty. This is where it always leads. We call it "democracy", but we are fools to ever trust government! When royalty was dispensed with, free people should have just ended the whole reign of government. The smaller the better... So now citizens of England are reduced to the level of hollering and yelling as they lose their freedom. Better to take up arms and revolt once more. Once again, courtesy of government, we continue the tradition of despotism.

We've had (in the U.S., anyway) a national identity number since before I was born. We have to use it to pay our required wage tax and to collect our various social security benefits.
Then we have a driver's license to prove not only that we once passed a driving test and it has recently become a sort of national identity card (REAL ID). I have no problem asking someone to prove who they are and their eligibility in exchange for certain benefits.
A far more dangerous issue is the mandatory use of digital currency to complete any transaction - traceable and controllable at the whim of a government. That is an already demonstrated threat (Canada's withholding credit card use) which is far worse than impeding traffic across a national border.
Yes, you’re quite right, a CBDC is truly worrying… now combine it with a digital national ID and we’re looking at an unprecedented level of total control. Those who aren’t concerned simply haven’t imagined it in the hands of their enemy.

When enough sheepl are denied gasoline,meat,bread etc because they have reached their monthly limit either government must relent or revolution will once again darken our shores. If I am right then the best course of action would be for the government to get on with it. The sooner the better. Years on the west coast of USA revealed that local and state government does not want to “appear mean” and enforce a rule, policy or existing law (unless it can be monetized against a business) Instead they prefer to “appear kind” let the accused off with a warning, and then create a more specific law for the future. Multiple decades of these “thoughtful” iterations created the law whereby stealing $900 per day, every day, from shoplifting was only a misdemeanor. Shoplifting soared!
