This problem would not be a problem if we did not give "them" free food, medical, education, housing et al.. Come here and vote for us.It's all free. Oh, steal cars, steel jewelery and rape. All good just remember who to vote for.

My wife and I are first generation immigrants. Came here legally with a little money. Again the answer is simple. Come here to work and build a better life. If not, you should not be here and we will deport you.

Brilliant. That is what happens when politicians put their own interests above their constituents

“Moreover, is ICE really prepared to deport close to one million people from just LA County alone and upwards of 15 million people from the U.S.?”…a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.

Thanks Sluggo! Cut the freebies off and they’ll self deport.

Sluggo's avatar

Absolutely. Enough of criminal border trespassers mooching off of the U.S. taxpayer. Enough.

The author described what the likes of Joe Biden have tried mightily to create. That is a problem that is so massive that would defy any other solution except to say "let 'em stay" which naturally would be accompanied by the correlary "let 'em vote".

Great article. I am a former resident of San Diego and moved far north 35 years ago. Thanks for sharing.

There is a more sensible and humane way to address the problem of undocumented immigrants

Foremost, recognize the vast majority came here for a better life. It’s not their fault our borders are so porous.

And now most are working in entry level jobs few genuine US citizens want.

In fact, some in the hospitality industry are currently excluded by Trump from his round-ups.

My suggestion is predicated on the premise that too many small businesses, farms and hotels need these undocumented immigrants

My suggestion: document them via a nationwide campaign.

Its purpose: urge undocumented immigrants to register with local Chambers of Commerce

As part of the registration process, applicants can submit their work history, tax returns; community services, church and work place endorsements and any commendations.

This material can be submitted to the INS for their review and, if compelling, referral to an administrative judge adjudicating immigration cases.

Something like this was put on offer during Trumps first term. However, elements within his "resist" movement refused a bargain to build the Wall in exchange for DACA and work permitting reforms.

Perhaps now having seen the light (from election loss) there also needs to be recognition that the needless delay they imposed has worked to import even more criminals amongst the potential workers, and now, cooperation with our LE in deporting those who are the real "deplorables" must be pursued alongside of cooperation in simultaneously completing construction of the Wall.

The recommendations by our Border Patrol personnel professionals, restoration of the principles of a "society governed by laws and not men" - and good old-fashioned common sense needs to be the rule.

A well written overview of a nightmare coming to a theater near us soon.

I live about 50 miles west of Detroit in a state loosing jobs and loosing young people moving elsewhere searching for a better future. We also are a state with a growing population of "no papers" people. The end of this story is a sad tale.

If you don't have borders, you don't have a country. Over the past 20 years the countries of the EU have learned that lesson in spades!

Trump said that he's targeting the deportation of one million illegals a year. So, thirteen years to go? Well, the longest part of any journey is said to be the first step - so "let's get steppin'"...and yes, let us prioritize the worst criminal elements and also those that would harbor, aid and abet their presence among us.

I suspect that there will be many twists and turns along the way and the deportation schedule will not be smoothly pursued. Therefore, prioritizing criminals is good, but so is building the Wall, work permits and DACA reforms.

We must resist sacrificing the underpinnings of a just society on the altar of emotional hemophilia. The 1081 reforms of the Magna Carta, where we derived the principle that a common law should govern all, rather than the dictates of empowered strongmen, presented either tearfully or otherwise, should be preserved at all costs.

This is no longer the case when our elected legislators refuse to legislate and instead declare "sanctuary zones", even as they act to block legislative reform. That is simply insurrection and a particular type of insurrection by a leadership that refuses to honor its role and their oath of office. This sort of treachery is deserving of the harshest of punishment.

Sorry, Joel. John Smith never set foot on Plymouth Rock. He was in Jamestown, Virginia, where he was famously canoodling with Pocahontas. It was Elder William Brewster who led the Pilgrims to Plymouth Colony and its famous rock. The puritans likely did little canoodling but did leave progeny.

As a quick aside. An early 1960's best-seller novel "The Sot weed Factor" by John Garth has one of the most humorous descriptions of the fictional interplay involved in the capture of John Smith by the natives, leading to his subsequent "dalliance" with Pocohontas.

Hysterically funny.

thank you for the great commentary. I've visisted California since the early 70's, and lived there for about 7 years in late 2000's. It's been obvious for years that this is where it would all end up. I could see years ago that Mexico would reclaim California just by moving in.

"The protestors, for their part, seem to be unclear about what they are after. Many are seen waving flags from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and elsewhere, as symbols of defiance. But at the same time, they’re protesting deportation to the countries of which flags they wave. Shouldn’t they be waving American flags if they want to stay in America?"

Too funny. You can't make this stuff up. On the plus side, you know without a doubt where their allegiance lies.

"The current circumstances are a total mess. Politicians, however, refuse to appreciate them or work to address them in a positive and constructive way." You have just identified the stupidity and laziness of the electorate. We, and that includes you, continue to elect a non-representative government. Of course, the elected non-representatives are aware of this and, when in office, do as they please with taxpayer money and loans. I think We the People", and yes, that includes you, must come to terms with this first. Until then, we will continue to lose our country until it is gone. And of course, coddled for votes aliens, will be happy to take it over.

I’ve recently watched multiple interviews discussing immigration problems affecting virtually every western nation and even South Africa. The theme is the same. Demographics have shifted profoundly and there will be no turning back. At the current rate of deportation in the US, it will take many decades, if not more than a century, to remove all illegals (assuming there is no further influx of illegals). Obviously every illegal will be long dead by then, so what‘s the point? We are living in a new reality and to think we can go back to the way it was is pure fantasy.

The concept "land of the free and home of the brave" was starting to be chipped away even before Georg Washington's term of office was over. Fear always trumps courage in the masses and so long as the 'deciders' are selected by these same masses the problems will not be solved. Change will only come about via self destruction.
