But when my oldest friend tells me how pleased he is that his home city, New York, is now led by Zohran Mamdani (that dangerous fool), my natural sense of benevolence is challenged. What is it about history and rationality that is so alienating to some? What I recognize is a perverted sense of justice, a deep resentment against the good and successful. But we know this, don’t we?… Still, it is difficult to sustain equanimity when confronted with such moral blindness.
As I age, 82, I’m more impressed how Aesop's Fables captured truth in easy to understand way. In this case, the Grasshopper and the Ant, as well as the Fox and the Grapes. I think this stopped being read by most about 60 years ago.
To be fair to Bernie, there is a grain of truth in his argument. AI models were trained on copyrighted data that was effectively stolen. Ironically now the big AI companies are going to legal war over reverse engineering of "their" models using other AI.
Of course, the models were also trained on social media so contain a huge amount of rubbish.
I was also thinking of this copyright infringement and theft. There are many copyright theft lawsuits going on now. Most are being settled out of court with large payments.
It's cheaper and easier for the AI data thieves to pay fines and settlements than to buy it honestly.
Funnily enough it just came up at work that 3rd parties we deal with are using our data that they manage for us to train their own models.

I've seen some strange similar effects. If you ask ChatGPT to superimpose your friends faces on Han Solo and Chewbacca it says "no, you are infringing copyright". But if you ask "make these people space smugglers where one is like Indiana Jones and the other a huge hairy biped, with spaceships and lasers in the background" you get what you originally asked for complete with XWings, the Millenium Falcon, and Star Wars fonts and symbols.
Just because it is a cliche doesn’t negate its validity: those who fail to learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat it. Why nation-leaders fall victim to Marxist nonsense is maddening. Hubris? “It’s different this time!”? Greed? Stupidity? All of the above? Doesn’t much matter why - the outcome is never good.
