That opening quote you attribute to Mark Twain I have far more often seen attributed to Blaise Pascal. Here is the version of it from Pascal’s “Provincial Letters” (#16) in Thomas M’Crie’s translation: “The present letter is a very long one, simply because I had no leisure to make it shorter.” Turns out that many other writers, including Cicero, have been given credit for variations on it.
