I’m a 75yo whose maternal grandfather went to school with Will Rogers. And so a quote from Will: “if you think you had problems with taxation without representation; you ought to see the problems you have with taxation with representation.” Comment about 1930.
Great article Joel. As a fellow Aussie, living in Perth, I was seriously disturbed by our state & federal government’s reaction to covid, but even more disturbing was the spineless enthusiasm in which many west Australians embraced the closed border initiative, all in the name of being ‘safe’! Our country needs its mongrel back and wokeness abolished. It needs risk takers and people who are accountable for their actions, not entitled champaign socialists. I hope we see a massive pendulum soon, otherwise I may become your neighbor in Argentina!
Can anyone say “Julian Assange”…! His incarceration is the embodiment of the repression we are currently facing. They say “this too shall pass…”, but I am concerned that the trend remains down…
Another example of our species proclivity to dominate, subjugate, exploit, oppress, torment and murder others.
I look forward to Joel delving not into this incurable human trait, but into our species mysterious desire for a strong leader; someone to tell us what to do.
Our history is replete with these people. Most seized and kept power through violence; some -- notably Trump -- democratically.
Regardless, we seem to desire being told what to do until we don't.
Interesting historical account. Thank you for that. Has me thinking about how the history of "The English speaking peoples" as Sir Winston characterized it, has been one of rebellion followed by forgiveness and then a firmer solidarity, as seen in two world wars and multiple "police action" taken since, the world over.
The Aussies, the New Zealanders, the Canadians and the Americans, standing shoulder to shoulder with our British cousins. Sure, we'll squabble now and again, but at the end of the day we'll come together, as we know the freedoms we defend are a legacy worthy of preservation.
My maternal Grandfather fought with the Blackwatch Highland Regiments in WWI, my paternal Grandfather and my father, with the American Expeditionary Forces in WWI and the Army Air Corps in WWII. and, in doing so, bought us all some breathing room.
This Memorial Day, I will toast (Rum and Ginger Beer, eh?) to the memory of our ancestors, our common fighting spirit, and those animating principles which stir it. I sense we're only taking that breather at the moment, unfortunately. Stay vigilant.
Thanks Joel - they say every day is a school day and I’ve certainly learnt today. We hear a lot (in the UK) about the US fight for independence but precious little about the struggle of Aussie’s to run their own affairs. All highly relevant if we are to stop the sleepwalk into an Orwellian nightmare.
DEAR JOEL WOW. MERMAID BEACH. HOW ROMANTIC. BUNDABERG RUM. GINGER BEER. DARK AND STORMY. SO EXOTIC. YOU HAVE ME IN A FANTISTIC DREAM STATE ALREADY. BUT---BACK TO REALITY. TWO IMPORTANT GOALS FOR NEXT 130 DAYSM 1. ELECT A DECENT PERSON OF THE HOMO SAPIENS FOR OUR NEXT PRESIDENT. 2. STOP WORLD WAR 3 IN

As is all movements, a few have to die for the rest to enjoy! Unfortunately that is the way of this "evil" world.
Cheers!
