New Wave, Old Wave

No man steps in the same river twice...

“No man ever steps in the same river twice. For it's not the same river and he's not the same man.”

~ Heraclitus

Joel Bowman, with today’s Note from the End of the World: The Gold Coast, Australia…

We’ve come full circle, dear reader, returned whence we came… and just in time for Mother’s Day!

It’s been almost six years since your antipodean editor set foot on these golden sands. Strolling along our native Mermaid Beach earlier today, we were stunned by the crowds. Within the hour we must have spotted almost a dozen people!

Where did everyone come from, we wondered?

Of course, nothing lasts forever… not currencies, not empires, not the sleepy, hippy beach towns of our childhood. In their place we find new money… new power… and new skyscrapers, reaching high into the heavens.

To paraphrase the ancient Greek philosopher we referenced earlier this week:

“No man ever surfs the same wave twice. For it’s not the same wave… and now he’s old and no longer able to touch his toes.”

Or something like that…

For more of Heraclitus’s wisdom, plus a few words of our own, please enjoy our this week’s Notes From the End of the World...

Wishing all the mothers a happy Mother’s Day today. We’re off to put on a lamb roast and pop some champagne for our own dear mum.

We’ll be back next week with more Notes, including your regular Sunday Sesh. Until then…

Cheers,

Joel Bowman
