Thanks Joel for the update. When I read your analysis of happenings in Argentina I can't help but relate to where we in the US are on the road to serfdom. Far too close for my liking.
Has Milei found an effective way to keep his supporters informed and equipped to counter the propaganda his critics most assuredly are relentlessly pumping out? If he no local media support, perhaps a daily podcast of a sort, could feed the hunger for truth and hope.
Hey there, Mr. Driver. Thanks for the question. One of the things the Milei election campaign did well was communicate the message of liberty through social media (mostly X). Not only did this bypass the whiny, would be censors, it helped engage a whole new demographic that traditionally swung hard left: the youth. Now we see kids reading Hayek and Rothbard…it’s almost considered a cool act of rebellion to be economically informed. Whether Milei succeeds or not, the future looks bright.
Yessir. It was heartening to see, during the recent union-sponsored protest, young people posting pictures of themselves at work, doing the right thing, with a hashtag #YoNoParo (I do not stop). Argentina has had 75 years of weak men, which have made for tough times. Now it’s time for strong (read: independent) men to rise up again. And the wheel turns…
Probably the most amazing thing is the speed of a free market response is almost instantaneous.
The Keynsians seem infuriated that they don't get to force their ideas on everyone else. It really is like their ideas are almost instantly inferior to the summary of everyone else's ideas.
I’ve been seeing quite a lot of vitriol regarding our friend JM of Argentine descent. It seems he’s a horrible little man who is a Jewish Zionist infiltrator and a WEF lapdog who has gotten elected to do a devious and evil takeover of Argentina to give all the “elites” a place of refuge when all hell breaks loose and the great unwashed swarm the castle walls. However, what he’s doing is NOT lining up with what THEY are saying. I personally have high hopes for JM and Argentina. But, I’ve been so jaded perhaps any glimmer of light will attract the moths, so to speak. I thought maybe you might want to address the above accusations in one of your posts. Perhaps a bit of insight from someone who is actually in Argentina may help calm the dogs. Or perhaps chasing those dogs could be a colossal waste of time. Meanwhile, I enjoy your missives so please, keep up the good work.
“Politicians are a lot like diapers. They should be changed frequently, and for the same reasons.”
So true LOL
Sadly just changing the person doesn't necessarily change anything, if all they do is change their rhetoric, and continue dancing to the same tune in a different step. Like Bush and Obama, the wars expanded. Then the people complaining about how horrible it was, said yeah but it's for the right reasons under Obama. What the ...???
One things for sure, you are right how they are able to try and stack the deck in their favor if/when they actually do lose an election, and when there's that much popular support they can't suppress and cheat their way to victory, they pull all the stops out to set the stage against the incoming apostate.
Milei may just outsmart them before it's all over, but I'm sure they have a few tricks up their sleeves besides the press corps.
Well, Joel, I started reading “The Night Drew Her Sable Cloak.”
Just the prologue was captivating: literature is autobiographical and autobiographical is fiction and the mind is an unreliable compilation of a haphazard stream of data.
Makes me wonder, why write?
Then you dance around the metaphysical. Is that like Hemingway, “Just write the story as true as you can and possibly you reach the fifth dimension.”
The first part is the best thing I have seen written against abortion since I read the “Cider House Rules.”
I had to buy the hard cover and found myself punching words on the page with my finger.
I am still digesting the last one which means it must have been good.
I so enjoy your writing style! What are “precios cuidados”? I looked it up and it says careful prices. I’ve never heard that term before and at the risk of you thinking me less than a smart person, tell me please.
Thank you, dear reader! You're right, the literal translation is "careful prices," but it's taken to mean more as something like "prices we're taking care of." Usually it's basics, like milk, eggs and butter, etc. During the pandemic it was masks and hand gel... exactly the products that we're promptly in short supply (as soon as the cost to manufacture them rose above the price producers were able to charge)...
I hope that Milei has his own security and not security provided by the State. I applaud his boldness of doing the right ting to right the ship, but there is danger when one has to step on the toes of those who have benefited from a corrupt system of government. More than anything, let's hope that his reforms succeed. The lives and lifestyles of millions of people hang in the balance!
Well, there is no danger in the near term… The trend is your friend. And the truth is that, albeit slowly, the dollar is losing its hegemony. The day will come eventually that the dollar will not be The Rock of Gibraltar. Perhaps by then, he can get a peso that is pegged to gold or oil…
Joel, Whether Pres. Milei succeeds down the road, its in the stars, the answer. But for today he is succeeding because the Elite are crying and attacking him, and the working class people support him. While the rest of the World, watches, not believing what they are seeing and excited that maybe they could do the same where they live. Success. Thanks Joel
I enjoy reading your missives from Argentina, as well as those from your colleagues in other locales. I have been a paid subscriber of your service, but recently decided to cancel my subscription. Why? Because of Bill Bonner. While I used to enjoy reading his musings, when he began bashing Israel for exercising their right to protect themselves against Hamas, I just couldn’t support your venture anymore. Bill’s focus on win-win encounters, which makes sense in many cases, just doesn’t apply when dealing with an enemy who has no interest in win-win, but rather wants to erase your entire nation and people from the face of the earth. If Israel has to kill a thousand times more Hamas than Israelis were slaughtered when Hamas attacked last October, so be it. Hamas and the Palestinians who voted for and support them (70%) should have considered that before they attacked. And to equate what happened between the Irish and British with what is happening between Gaza and Israel is just insane. And stating that the Japanese were ready to surrender had the US just been more patient before dropping nuclear weapons on two Japanese cities is pure BS. Bill Bonner is one of the elites he rightfully bashes. When Bonner Private Research finally goes down, you will have no one other than Bill Bonner to thank
Good day Mr. Ellison, thanks for your comment. I can only speak for my own writing and opinions here, but you’re more than welcome to follow along with this substack. Although I can’t guarantee you’ll always like what you read here either, I can commit to writing honest, considered opinions….with a wry smile and a furrowed brow, of course. Cheers!
I think the self image of Israel as a moral society is something I haven't seen anywhere else in the world. How important it is to be exceptional. We are the Chosen People. This is part of the Israeli self-identification as a very superior moral people, and I grew up on this "the most moral army in the world." And I think it's very hard for Israelis to admit they commit war crimes. Because, basically, the project of Zionism has a problem. It's a tragedy in a sense. Jews had to escape from Europe to find a safe haven, but you cannot create a safe haven by creating a catastrophe for other people.

😎 thank you sir, another fine mixture of serious discussion and humor.
Thank you kindly!

Maybe people are actually learning that there is no such thing as a free meal! Keep up the good work Joel.

And women too, of course 👍🏻
Nice Work Joel.

Without all the State agencies and programs, how will everyone get all their FREE STUFF!!!?

Excellent insights. And some solid grist for the mill of a future post. Thanks for the suggestion…and for reading!
My Russian ex wife tells me that Milei is a puppet of smart Americans! Lol.
And told me to read his biography ?

My favorite comment of the week. Thank you, kind sir!

Chapeaux Mr Bowman. Makes me want to emigrate to Argentina!
It’s a battle and you’re calling the shots well. Intensely interesting. A preview of our future.
