Great piece. The history of treaties (Louisiana & Alaska) vs. gains from battle (Canada & Mexico) should be held alongside several other categories; those won in battle only to be given back when requested. (Philippines), those Territories awaiting either admission to the Union or independence (Puerto Rico) or those in active negotiation (Greenland)
Where do we go from here? We go down with the collectivist, statist ship, if we don't separate, and soon, as the formerly great lady is foundering. What started with communism will end with Islam. Best always. PM
Joel, Think we in the U.S. forgot we had to keep fighting for our Freedom against the Powers of the hiearchy we elected to govern our Democracy. We trusted they had the interest of the people at heart, and we got lazy in that fight. The ruin was killing off civilizations to expand our borders of power and wealth, instead of supporting others in their desire for the freedom we acheived. Now we have 2 political parties (the Uniparty)who only desire more money and power, and to hell with the people they represent.
The best history book on the US that I have read, John Marshall’s “Washington.” The environment, pre 1776, produced rugged individuals. Different environment creating different people today.
John Marshal was fourth Chief Justice. He was a participant and close to this history. The book is ‘Washington” free on Kindle. Covers Jamestown through the Revolution, the beginnings and development of the people of the Colonies, a unique circumstance in world history.
Ok Joel .. lots of luv left in the old empire .. but it's not the love your ancient Greeks or Romans it the kind the of luv f**k itself into oblivion .. but of course that a free choice of free people most of whom have NO idea what the hell that word actually means .. there is NO freedom without responsibility for your thoughts words and deeds .. so learn to take it on the chin mate .. so tell us how that working in your Pampas paradise rather that postmortems on disneyland !
Great wisdom, as always, Joel. And thanks for reminding me of that Benjamin Franklin quote! I’m putting together a document of my own favorite quotations (including some of my own! 😂), and that one has just been added!
Much of the hyperventilation stems from waaaay too much time on the web. We have friends, good friends, who value Trump as much as we valued Biden and Obama.
We think that, while the majority of voters don’t live on and in the web, there are enough bored, underutilized people who do live there that exacerbating differences of opinion is a successful career move. See also MSNBC, CNN, ABC, NBC.

Excellent points!
Some excellent history. Must always remember to look under the "sheets" as the old saying goes.

Thanks for the book. I will love it.
Is this really a good book on Washington? I've read Chernow's I believe.
Ahh! Empires come. Empires go. History proves it so.

Can I ask what did you like most about Biden?
That he’s officially OVER.
😂😂
