I recall when Reagan was first in office that we had a debt in the billions. I don't recall the exact total, but it was somewhere around 10 or 12 billion. I wrote a letter to our local paper (which is now a non-profit run rag of whoop-de-do for the State of Maine with scant real news). The Portland Press Herald back then published reader's letters on its editorial page. In my letter I urged the payment of that debt while it was manageable and warned that we shouldn't let that grow too large and become unwieldy. (Doesn't everyone know that debts need to be paid and not allowed to accumuIate and grow gargantuan?) I was teased by friends for that published letter and ribbed for my concern as if I were Henny Penny expecting the sky to fall. Well...here we are 40 years or so later and even Ronald Reagan couldn't be bothered to pay off that debt. He just decided to double it! In subsequent decades it tripped and quadrupled, etc. until here we are at nearly 40 trillion dollars. I feel unsatifyingly vindicated for that long-ago letter. I sympathize with reader Michael Rizzuto's letter in ALL CAPS. I'm no economist. I write poetry for g-d's sake! I like to sing and make music still in my advanced years! But I do have common sense and I see little of that in our politicians, academics, and even in our genius techies. Lordy, the world is just plain ungrounded at best and deranged at worst. Too many are living in the ether of enchantment. Pay your friggin bills on time or the natural law of the universe will show you what's what when those heavenly laws are ignored.
I HAVE BEEN PREDICTING A DEBT DISASTER FOR OVER 45 YEARS AND HAVE BEEN DEAD WRONG. NEARLY EVERYONE I TRIED TO TALK TO ABOUT THIS LAUGHED IT OFF ALL THIS TIME.
NOW IT LOOKS MUCH MORE LIKELY TO FINALLY HAPPEN. I HAVE BEEN SCREAMING FROM THE HOUSE TOPS, AND BEING IGNORED FOR DECADES, THAT THIS IS NOT GOING TO BE PRETTY WHEN IT FINALLY HAPPENS.
ALSO, I AM ASTONISHED THAT IT TOOK THIS LONG TO FINALLY COME TO A HEAD! I ALWAYS THOUGHT OUR GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS COULD NOT REALLY BE THIS STUPID, AND THAT SOME CLEAR-HEADED PEOPLE WILL EVENTUALLY TAKE CONTROL.

RESPONSIBLE GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS ARE LIKE JUMBO SHRIMP. IT SIMPLY CAN NOT BE.
Kudos for the clever juxtaposition of cyclosporiasis and the debt bomb. The detonation of the latter will indeed wreak discomfort and distress that lasts generations rather than weeks.

Will be a great ending to the most corrupt media rag in history. Of course many others will hopefully fall victim of their own lies and misinformation. Alas, and I am sorry to say, that the irrelevant NYT along with all other pernicious propaganda and dreckish noise outlets are useless. We the People are fully to blame for the inevitable destruction of the modern world order. After all, while we, the exploding Boomers, invented and toiled, we continued to elect the magicians who, with magical sleight of hand and words, created debt out of nothing.
