Joel Bowman, flâneuring the capital city of Buenos Aires, Argentina…
With over three-hundred theaters to enjoy in the city, the “Paris of the South” has more than double the venues of its northern namesake (with a mere 130).
Your editor caught a magical performance of Le Corsaire at the city’s premier Teatro Colón recently and was delighted to find himself among a packed house. (The performers kindly added three shows to the schedule to meet sky-high demand… one of the many joys of living in a cosmopolitan capital.)
As for the theater’s sumptuous settings, we happily defer to the late, great Luciano Pavarotti’s assessment when he wryly complained:
“The theatre has the greatest defect: its acoustics are perfect! Imagine what this signifies for the singer: if one sings something bad, one notices immediately.”
Pavarotti performed here once, in 1987, when it was said he delivered a pitch perfect performance… never to be repeated in the storied building. What one wouldn’t give to have been there that evening…
