Perhaps Joel’s faith in an emerging awareness among us proles is rooted in an error expressed in Hannah Arent’s reasoning. Just because we can’t possibly trust anything the lying liars in government shoot out of their pie holes doesn’t also mean we can’t tell right from wrong.

Agreed, good sir. To be sure, I'm not suggesting that is the case (that we can't tell right from wrong), merely that to disorientate and confuse us is their overarching goal. The millions of little lies they tell along the way is the means by which they seek to achieve that end.

Yes. And when enough of us wake up, these psychos will be faced with the harsh truth that the only power they ever had over us was the power we gave them.

Thanks Joel for a good laugh on a rainy day. I love the way you squeeze some humor out of painful subjects.

Also, we must all remember the first rule according to George Carlin, “don’t believe anything your government tells you”.

Joel:

I know you know this, but judging the average American by what politicians claim is a fool's errand. This speaks volumes about politicians and nothing about average citizens. OTOH: it is good for all of us to be reminded from time to time of the untruths we are being told by those who would ask for our votes. Yes, it's shameful. But entirely to be expected.

Yes, indeed. All the more reason to get out and see these places for oneself. Happily, the reality we "know" is far superior to anything the catastrophizing loons in the media would have us believe. Cheers to you and yours!

Excellent quote from Mr. Arendt. That seems to match my personal experience where it is getting more and more difficult to tell which way is up! Thanks for sharing your stories and insights.

Yeah, she had a lot of valuable insights. I went down a big Arendt-shaped wormhole during the pandemic, particularly her Origins of Totalitarianism. Almost seemed as though she was writing from beyond the crypt. Cheers!

It's hard to imagine the levels of racism that occur, unless you see it with your own eyes. And it's even harder to imagine when it happens right in front of (or beside) you. But when the press tries to lie about it? Then you can't trust the press anymore.

A masterful job of noticing innumerable inconvenient untruths Joel.

Hope you continue to enjoy the beautiful Smoky Mountains.

Spent lot of time in those mountains. Though like any respectable Tennessean I now live in Texas.

Be sure and get yourself over to Townsend on the “other” side of the loop to Knoxville. It’s a little “quieter” there, though catching up. Even 50 years ago Pigeon Forge seemed capitalism run amok, if harmless, except to your wallet and natural veracity.

I was recently told by a local insider that the main reason the quieter side fell behind was that the insiders didn’t see the need to fund municipal sewers.

So rampant capitalism seems dependent on sewers it would seem.

Be sure and take the loop through Cades Cove for a better feel of the mountains 100-150 years ago. At least from the local inhabitant’s perspective.

And if you travel the mountains more broadly, and with a bigger eye to see, toward the NC side (Asheville area and the particularly the Biltmore as an extreme example), you may surmise that the money from the Eastern coast seemed to be filtered out on the climb of elevation…whether a particularly to sewers is unsettled. As mountains both sides are similar, but the resort areas reflect somewhat different tastes in “high” livin’.

About 30 years ago I flew with an ole German who was an excellent pilot and a professed nazi. When referring to the politicos he would say “The lying liars and the lies they love to lie about”. After reading Hannah Arendt’s quote, I think his humorous statement had a much deeper meaning. Satan is “the father of lies”. Evil will rule over us - - if we let it!

First they lied about WMD and I did not speak out because Saddam deserved it,

Then they lied about the Russians and I did not speak out because Putin has done wicked things,

Then they lied about Trump and I did not speak out because I dislike him,

Then they lied about me and there was no one left to speak out.

With apologies to Martin Niemöller.

In 1987, my young family and I were driving eastward across the country after spending three years in the Philippines to our next Air Force duty station in South Carolina. Tiring of the monotony of interstate highways, we took an exit in Tennessee to see what we could see. We came upon a restaurant advertising fried catfish, and having never dined on catfish, we decided to try it out. My Taiwanese wife and I both ordered a catfish meal. My entree was tasty, but my wife complained of her fish tasting foul, so I took a bite of her serving to see what she meant. Sure enough, her fish smelled and tasted rotten. I politely informed the waitress of the problem, thinking it was an honest mistake, and she returned my wife’s catfish to the kitchen. She returned shortly with the same dish and stated, “The cook said to tell you that’s the way it’s supposed to taste.” So, I just shared my tasty catfish with my wife and we left her serving untouched. Our children’s meals were also fine. While I was perplexed at the time, in my naïveté it didn’t occur to me until much later that serving my Asian wife rotten food was an act of racism. We’ve been married 51 years now and have traveled extensively around the USA and world wide. That incident was the first, last, and only occasion my wife was discriminated against. Individual racism? Yes. Systemic racism? Surely not. Just the hateful act of one ignorant person. Such dolts will always exist, but it doesn’t define a nation.

Are there not supposedly lies and damned lies?

Maybe for many it’s a truth in disguise and thus it self evidently is not a lie at all.
