I wonder if the current presidential candidates, or a sizable portion of the voters, could find Greece on a map.

Another great essay, Joel. As always, the classics are a welcome resource, and reprieve.

My two-cents (worth only one after inflation) on the travesty a couple nights ago:

Yessir, that's me!

There was some confusion regarding this back when we set up the company (you can read of our hiccups here: https://joelbowman.substack.com/p/the-bowman-pub )

But rest assured, the charge is legit and the support greatly appreciated. Cheers!

And lest We the People forget, our Founding Fathers’ understanding of Greek classics and history led them away from direct democracy. Moreover, their profound acceptance and understanding of the Holy Bible led them to structure one-third of our Constitution directly from holy scripture and another almost one-third from commentaries of scripture.

I will note in passing that the Greek empire no longer exists. However, God has a kingdom that will last forever. That is a long time. Learn more about it in Discourse On Agape,, which you can read free here: https://discourseonagape.org/booklets/

Is it also just some supreme irony that the last 20 years has featured the uprising against America's founders? Could what we have today been the planned result? Or did it result from lack of planning, and just happenstance?

Methinks it was planned.

I wouldn’t call it planned. It is just that governing individual liberty is somewhat an oxymoron. It wasn’t planned but inevitable that the mob’s individual liberties would ultimately be unmanageable. Worse, it is void of a stitch of principles beyond liberty.

Benjamin Franklin alongside a majority of the framers of the U.S. Constitution were well-known Freemasons. They sought to break away from the Monarchs and aristocrats to set up a land of Free-people, with limited governmental powers. In Free-Masonry there is a phrase that we ‘look to the East’, which alludes to the Ancient past. For example the ancient Semitic word [םדק] qdm or the Greek word Kadmos, can be interpreted as “East”, “ancient past”, or “the direction of the rising sun.” Unlike western thought, the past is represented as the front or leader, because we can learn and be better equipped from studying the past to assist us in our journey forward as free men.

Furthermore, the Master of a Masonic lodge, sits in the east, as to represent the Knowledge of the past to bring order to the present. In a lodge, the East side usually has a blazing star with the letter “G”, implicating Gnosis and liberation (Divine Knowledge). It is therefore logical that we should all learn from the past to govern ourselves accordingly, while implementing checks and balances to governmental institutions which should be held to a higher moral compass.

I am looking forward to the Essential Greek course!
