1,000 Miles Away

Farewell to Down Under...
14

“Spend half my life in airports doing crosswords and attempting to sleep,
And when the bar is open then you'll often find me warming a seat.”

~ Hoodoo Gurus, 1,000 Miles Away (1991)

Joel Bowman, with today’s Note From the End of the World: Brisbane, Australia…

Our time Down Under is drawing to an end, dear reader. From the Great Ocean Road to the Glass House Mountains, the hallowed grounds of the MCG to the locals’ pub down in Port Campbell, our home beach on the Gold Coast to Queensland’s capital city of Brisbane (where we snapped the above clip, exiting the Treasury Hotel in the old Land Administration Building this morning), it’s been quite the journey.

From here, our peripatetic family of three heads north, into Asia to look, listen and learn…

Has the “Greatest Political Experiment of Our Time” crossed over from west to east? Are the Asian economies more or less free than our own backyards? What lessons have we to learn from our neighbors to the east, both past and present? We’ll see soon enough.

For now, it’s time to throw one more prawn (Aussies do not say “shrimp”) on the barbie, tell one more tall tale with childhood mates and say cheerio to loved ones. In the meantime, please enjoy this past week’s articles, archived for your reading pleasure below.

We’ve also included a column written back in January, “The 1837 Generation,” delving into a bit of Argentine history. Yesterday was the Día de la Revolución de Mayo (a holiday to commemorate a week-long series of events that took place from May 18 to 25, 1810, in Buenos Aires, which set Argentina on the course of independence from Spain).
