Joel Bowman with today’s brief Note From the End of the World: Teatro Colon, Buenos Aires…
Luciano Pavarotti only performed once in the magnificent Teatro Colón, here in Buenos Aires. His reason:
“The theatre has the greatest defect: its acoustics are perfect! Imagine what this signifies for the singer: if one sings something bad, one notices immediately.”
When the incomparable tenor performed here, in 1987, it was said he delivered a pitch perfect performance… never to be repeated in the storied building. What one wouldn’t give to have been there that evening…
Unable to make it for that particular occasion, we settled for a magical performance of Giselle at the city’s premier house Thursday night, part of a special “Mother’s Day” treat organized by dear daughter (9yrs). Moreover, The Bowmans were delighted to find themselves among a packed house (the performers having added a couple of dates to the schedule to meet sky-high demand… one of the many joys of living in a world class, cosmopolitan capital.)
With over three-hundred theaters to enjoy in the city, the “Paris of the South” has more than double the venues of its northern namesake (with a “mere” 130). As you can see for yourself from the short clip above, and contrary to what the naysayers in the popular presses would have you believe, the arts are alive and well down at the End of the World.
Viva la libertad…and Bravo!
And now for your Notes From the End of the Week…
Final Notes…
We’re celebrating Día de la Madre (Mother’s Day) with a picnic in the park today, a family tradition.
There’ll be jamón Ibérico and camembert and sparkling rosé from Mendoza, plus fresh strawberries, currently in season. Then it’s home for dad’s speciality – braised pork ragù and pappardelle with bitter leaf and orange salad.
Whatever you’re up to this weekend, take a moment to thank the woman (adult female human) who brought you along for the journey: mom.
And stay tuned for more Notes From the End of the World…
Cheers,
Joel Bowman
